SAS 100AX is a 2-unit hybrid course that provides science-based learning strategies to first-year students to make their studying more effective and efficient. Topics include overcoming test anxiety, time management skills, and active study strategies. Classes meet in-person one day a week for a short presentation followed by a collaborative activity. The rest of the content includes supplemental resources and assignments delivered online for students.
Key UTA-led components of our course may include UTA spotlights---short 1-2 minute presentations sharing tips for succeeding in college and experiences UTAs have had in college life; Campus Connections---showcasing various events, services, and resources around the UA campus; and short collaborative activities to encourage students’ sense of belonging and connection to the UA.
The SAS 100AX UTAs work in partnership with course instructors to support incoming first-year students in developing strategies for academic success and a sense of belonging at the University. UTAs will be in-class facilitators and mentors to students, as well as having grading responsibilities outside of class.
This position will be for the Fall 2024 semester, with the possibility of working in Spring 2025 and the following semesters. The rate of pay for Fall 2024 is $15.00 per hour. Pay raises are commensurate with additional experience and required training.

Responsibilities
- Facilitate SAS 100AX classroom discussions and collaborative learning activities and assist with classroom management.
- Grading student work, evaluating for assignment completion
- Promote THINK TANK and UA services, particularly encouraging students to connect with their Academic Coaches and MATH 100 support.
- Share experiences at the University of Arizona with first-year students.
- Provide feedback and reflection about SAS 100AX curriculum and classes to program staff.
- Other duties and special projects as assigned by program staff.
Qualifications
- Current UA student with an interest in helping other students adjust to college and college level coursework.
- Commitment to creating a welcoming and positive environment for a diverse student population through excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Highly dependable and punctual.
- Must be available for mandatory trainings in August the week prior to the start of the semester, August 21st, 22nd, and 23rd.
- Must be available Fridays from 9-10 AM (highly preferred) or Fridays 12-1 PM during the fall semester.
- Available to work daytime hours.
- Available to work at least 8 hours per week, preferred for up to 15 hours per week.
- Preferred (not mandatory) qualification: students who have completed the Schedule for Success program, and/or have experience working with the math learning platform ALEKS.
