Academic Skills Tutoring FAQ

Peer Academic Coaching Frequently Asked Questions

Peer Academic Coaches (PAC) work with you individually on the general academic skills that can help you
be successful in any class. This includes topics such as:
• Time management
• Note-taking
• Final exam preparation
A PAC can provide guidance on how to navigate college success strategies like figuring out when
assignments are due or creating an effective study plan for your general education class. PACs are ready
to meet with students and assist in the unique ways each student requires.
PACs are available for follow up appointments as well in case students want to try a strategy and check
back in on their progress. PACs also offer workshops on these topics.

Yes! All Academic Skills services with PACs including appointments, drop-ins, and workshops are always completely free!

To view Peer Academic Coaching drop-in hours, please see the Drop-in Tutoring Schedule. You can join an online drop-in session from the Online services page. You can also meet with a PAC in person in the Bartlett Academic Success Center by checking in at the Front Desk on the 2nd floor and asking to meet with a PAC.

Please start with a drop-in session! Our PACs are happy to meet you in-person at BASC or via Zoom. Please see the Drop-in Schedule for available times.

PACs will spend a little time getting to know you and what brought you in to see them and then start discussing possible strategies. If you are seeking general guidance, please come prepared with an open mind to talk over strategies with PAC. If you have a specific need, please come prepared with planners, assignments, laptops, syllabi, or any other concrete examples related to the topics you want to discuss. You are welcome to schedule a follow up appointment to check in on your progress!

PACs are trained to support students in the following topics:

Most students who choose the semester pass meet every week or every other week for coaching appointments. Other options include a four-session bundle (four one-hour appointments) or one session.

Peer Academic Coaches (PACs) are trained undergraduate students who provide support to students on many of the same topics as Academic Coaches. Whether a student sees an Academic Coach or a PAC is largely about the comfort level and needs of the student. Where PACs may be more approachable for some students, others find the additional mentorship,
guidance, structure, and professional expertise of an Academic Coach valuable when navigating the university. In addition, students typically have regularly standing appointments with their Academic Coach. To learn more about PACs, visit our Peer Coaching page.

Workshops Frequently Asked Questions

Requested workshops are on hiatus for Fall 2024. Please see our scheduled workshops or visit Peer Academic Coaching drop-ins.

You should receive confirmation that we have received your request within 3 business (M-F) days. After that, we will reach out to our staff to find someone to present the workshop. Within six business days of the initial request, we will respond to let you know which of the proposed times we are able to present a workshop, or if we are unable to fulfill the request.

Once the time and day is confirmed, we suggest you reserve a room or technology if needed. Two days prior to the confirmed date, we will reach out with a final confirmation and handouts that will be used.

The host is expected to provide copies of the handouts for participants as well as a laptop and projector for the presentation.

Workshops for the University of Arizona campus are free! However, there may be a cost associated with renting a room or renting technology (if done through the Student Union). University affiliates can borrow laptops and projectors from the University Libraries for no cost. University offices and organizations may also be able to reserve meeting rooms in the Student Union or reserve classroom space through the registrar for no cost. THINK TANK is not responsible for any costs incurred.

For small groups, the library has several meeting spaces that can be reserved. Larger groups may want to look at options for reserving rooms in the Student Union or reserving a classroom through the registrar.

We recommend requesting workshops at least one week in advance. If you have a custom request or will need to reserve a room specifically for the workshop, we encourage you to request the workshop at least two weeks in advance. We do not guarantee that we will be able to fill each request, regardless of how far in advance it is requested, but we will always try to fulfill each request.

Workshops are planned to be 50 minutes long. If you would like a shorter version, please let us know.

We offer a variety of workshop topics, days, times, in-person and online throughout the semester!
For a complete schedule of available workshops, visit the THINK TANK workshops page.
